Description

With that in mind we are looking for a quality engineer who will enhance our efforts in providing best-in-class products to our customers worldwide. 

Position Summary

In this position you will be utilizing engineering fundamentals as well as the knowledge from real-world field experience, the Quality Engineer ensures the quality of all Black Diamond Equipment climbing / skiing products and:

- Leads the creation of testing models for analysis of new product and current production raw materials, materials in process, and finished products.

- Performs the necessary inspection and testing of raw materials, materials in process, and finished products for new product introduction. 

- During the design and development of new product, conducts statistical and graphical analysis of test data and determines product and component strength ratings while taking into consideration typical use, miss-use and abuse scenarios.

- Designs, develops, and maintains both software and hardware for data acquisition systems for various product testing needs.

- Designs and fabricates test fixtures for real world assimilation as well as repeatability as it pertains to new product development and introduction.

- Provides technical support and product-user insight and feedback

- Maintains quality records systems for test, design, and product rating documents

- Helps to drive investigations, as necessary, as it pertains to current product proposed design changes, material qualifications or manufacturing investigations.

Qualifications

Education 

Required: Bachelors degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Materials Science)

Preferred: Bachelors degree in one of the above with advanced coursework in statistical analysis and data aquisition.

Work Experience

Required: zero to five years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment; Internships or major class work focused on fundamentals of engineering, testing materials & statistical analysis.

Preferred: Two to five years engineering experience in a quality capacity for highly technical consumer goods. Experience with materials testing, statistical analysis, design and theory of mechanical systems, data acquisition systems, and measurement methods.

Skills and general experience:

Required: General knowledge of strength of materials, statistics, data acquisition systems, and failure analysis. General database, word processing, 3D modeling, controls software, and spreadsheet knowledge. Ability to read and implement technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to design test fixtures and relevant test procedures. Ability to collect and present data, identify trends, and make written and verbal reports on conclusions. Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain both mechanical and electronics based testing equipment. 

Must have an advanced working user's knowledge of climbing and climbing gear, skis and skiing gear and possess demonstrated ability to field test gear and provide immediate feedback. Must be an active Climber and Backcountry Skier.

Preferred: All the above plus 

- strong SPC background

- experience with ISO 9001

- proficiency machining and assembling test fixtures

Alternative qualification: two to five years experience in materials testing & statistical analysis in lab or similar testing setting.

Requirements

General physical requirements: Light work; occasional Medium to Heavy work. Some domestic international travel to OEM factories may be required.

Visual acuity requirements: Close vision, Color vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception, Ability to adjust focus. 

Motion and sensory requirements: Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pulling, Lifting, Fingering, Grasping, Feeling, and Talking.

Physical working conditions: Oils, inside atmosphere, Hazards

Essential Functions

Responsible and authorized to continuously improve upon and perform the following functions in accordance with BD's Quality System Safety and Employee Policy procedures and policies:

1. Design, perform and investigate raw material, work-in-process and final batch tests as deemed necessary by design team.

2. member of design team for new product introduction responsible for creation, delivery and execution of the Quality Plan and User Risk Agreement.

3. Conduct analysis of test data; prepare written and verbal reports of analysis and distribute as required; prepare written reports discussing unusual test results and have the ability to suggest appropriate action items.

4. Design, develop and maintain both software and hardware for data acquisition systems for various product testing needs. 

5. Design, fabricate and maintain test fixtures and machinery as directed. 

6. Maintain a records system for test, design, and ratings documents

7. Responsible for helping to maintain Quality test lab, equipment & fixtures in a clean, neat and organized manner.

8. Create and maintain testing instructions, test equipment operating instructions and inspection documentation.
